The city of Coimbatore shares a special bond with Mahatma and has played a seminal role in nurturing the patriotic fervor in this region. Mahatma had visited the city thrice and left indelible footprints in this landscape.
The simple tiled-roof house of Shri G D Naidu family at Podanur gained historical significance in 1934 when Mahatma stayed overnight in this house on the 6th & 7th of February which had been occupied by Sri.Avinashilingam Chettiar, the founder of the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya to run a small school for the Harijan students. Ideologically, this simple abode became an ideal space for the Mahatma to stay, who patronized Harijan welfare and emancipation.
The G D House, embodies the memory and message of Mahatma and it is with this purpose, under the guidance of Dr. B K Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Shri. G D Gopal, Chairman of the G D Group, has embarked upon a noble initiative to erect a memorial for the Mahatma by restoring the G D House. The G D House, with all its characters intact, is now a memorial showcasing the life and message of Mahatma Gandhi.
The exhibition house showcasing the replica of the artifacts used by Mahatma, along with large photographs and paintings that reflect the historical connect with Mahatma and Coimbatore.
It stacks rare books and literature on Mahatma and exclusive correspondence of Mahatma for the visitors to read, infer and round-the-clock screening of unique original documentaries on Mahatma.
In memory of his stay at the GD House in the year 1934, A statue of Mahatma Gandhi was erected at this Memorial in conveyance of his words: "MY LIFE IS MY MESSAGE"
A space to deliberate on the cardinal principles of Sathyam, Dharma and Ahimsa which led to all new social construct.
A Pictorial Gallery illustrating the life and activities of Mahatma which shall serve as a source of inspiration and guidance to the visitors.
The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial was inaugurated on October 02nd 2022, the 153rd birth anniversary of Gandhiji, by renowned Gandhian and Padma Bhushan awardee Smt. Krishnammal Jaganathan in the presence of District Collector Dr.G.S.Sameeran. Around 950 people took part in the inauguration ceremony.
As a part of the 15th edition of Kovai Vizha, ORUMAI PAYANAM, a Journey for Unity was organized by Shanti Ashram in collaboration with Kumaraguru Institutions and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial, where students from all walks of life and of various religions visited all religious places of worship and gathered at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial together with the respective religious leaders, as a means of secularism which was also one of the principles followed and preached by Mahatma Gandhiji.
On the 5th January 2023, the Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) along with District Differently Abled Welfare Office(DDAWO) – Coimbatore, conducted an educational tour for the differently abled young children of Coimbatore. Mahatma Gandhi Memorial was one of the places of visit.
On the occasion of International Women's Day, District Collector Mr. Kranti Kumar Pati I.A.S., inaugurated the GD Learning Centre and addressed the tailoring candidates of GDLC at MGM Campus. Tailoring kits were distributed to the candidates.
